Personal Statement

One thing that I can honestly say about my college experience is that it has been one crazy ride. There have been countless life lessons that I have gained through my time at both West Valley College and San Jose State. Coming into college I had no idea what I wanted to do with my future or what field of study that I wanted to major in. I remember being absolutely terrified of having to taking a public speaking class and it was for this reason that I kept putting it off. After finally taking that course I came out of it a changed man. That public speaking class completely changed my attitude towards talking in front of people. It made me feel like I was connected to everyone else in the class and we all felt united. It was because of the experience that I had in this course that I decided that I want to major in Communication Studies. I saw it as an opportunity for tremendous personal growth as communicating had never been one of my strong suits. I was always somebody that kept to myself and was uncomfortable in social settings. I also chose Communication Studies because I knew that it would give me more freedom in terms of what kinds of career paths that I could take. Throughout my time as a communication studies major, I have learned a ton about all the different subfields of the Communication Studies major. I learned a lot about Interpersonal relationships and what it takes to maintain a healthy relationship with friends and family. The lessons that I have learned through studying Interpersonal Communication has really changed my perspective on building and maintaining relationships and this is something that I will be bringing with me into my future career.

Cultivation Theory Group Research Project

This group project was completed with help from Amin Behjat, Phillip LoPresti, and Nathaniel Moore.

The following assignment was taken in an Inquiry course titled Quantitative Communication Inquiry. I have also taken another Inquiry class this past semester called Organizational Communication Inquiry. After having taken both of these classes I can say that my understanding of Inquiry is that it is a way of creating new knowledge through extensive research using both Quantitative and Qualitative methods. By taking both of these two Inquiry classes I really learned a lot about what it means to conduct research as well as what to do with the collected data after you have received it. The lessons that I learned in these courses were much bigger than the courses themselves. These lessons have completely changed my perspective and the way I look at the world around me. I have learned to challenge what is assumed to be true and come up with new ideas for why things happen the way they do. I chose to include the following assignment in my portfolio because it was the first major project that I completed that both introduced me to the process of conducting research and also how to calculate the results to determine if support was found for the hypothesis that we originally had. During this project I also learned how to make a quality questionnaire including questions that would focus on getting me the most reliable and valid results possible. In this project me and my fellow group members focused on the topic of Cultivation theory and tried to find out what aspects of people are changed by what they watch on television.
